Are you asking about where to obtain them or what they should be?

Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, being one of the most well-known dramas in the Western world, has been staged countless times with many different approaches to costuming.

Traditionalists usually use the toga, either in the Greek or Roman styles. A simple white sheet will suffice to improvise a toga. Adornments like laurel crowns can be improvised from palm leaves or can be purchased from online novelty stores. Similarly, the drama can be placed in the distant, distant past, with Oedipus and the people of Thebes wearing animal skins and rags.

You can give the drama a modern flavor by placing it in the current era — Oedipus would be the president of a modern state, and the Seer would be a priest or clergyman. The cast could wear business suits and otherwise contemporary dress, similar to what today’s dignitaries wear. The chorus could be a group of television news reporters, with microphones, cameras, etc.

Colors are also important. Clothing your main characters in white would add real drama to the climax of the play, when Oedipus gouges out his own eyes and blood spurts everywhere.

Remember, the Greeks did not have the theatrical props, special effects, and cinematic tools that we have. Their stage was sparse, with very little elaboration and simple costumes. The dramatic weight of Sophocles’ tragedy makes elaborate staging unecessary. Whatever you choose will no doubt be very effective.
