The Magic Of Costumes

July 30, 2009

I'm convinced that people of all ages love everything make believe. We are fascinated with what we are not and with what we could be. We love to be swept away into stories other than our own. We go to movies, see live plays, and read novels to keep us dreaming. Costumes are one of the key elements that escort us into make believe no matter how young or old we are.

Think about it, from the time we were little we celebrated a holiday called Halloween by shopping for or having our mothers make us the perfect costumes. Having the right costumes was the biggest deal. We got to wear them to school and show off to our teachers and friends and we got to parade around our neighborhoods and display our costumes proudly to everyone we saw. We loved to dress up as princesses, ghosts, or our favorite characters from cartoons. Putting on our prized costumes meant much more than putting on an outfit. With our costumes we put on an entirely different identity so that we didn't just dress up as a princess but we really became one. We actually became our favorite cartoon characters and our favorite good and bad guys.

The older children get, the less interested they are in celebrating Halloween with great costumes, but they love make believe just as much. Teens and adults get our fill of make believe through television, movies, plays and even books. Costumes are an important part of each of these avenues of imagination.

When reading a novel we picture the costumes and clothing that each character wears. We begin to identify certain characters by the costumes we clothe them in. We go to a film or a play and are fascinated with the costumes that allow each actor or actress to become the character they are playing. Great costumes and great acting allow us to forget that the eighty year old grandma we're watching is actually are favorite thirty-five year old actor with a weird dress and a whole lot of makeup.

If you have ever seen a live play then you know the vital role that costumes play in making any production what it is. Can you imagine seeing the Lion King on Broadway without any costumes? Of course not! How would you know what actors are supposed to be which animal or how would you tell the difference between the young and old lions? It is the use of amazing, detailed, colorful costumes that allow live shows to transport us into other worlds.

Costumes of all kinds are magical. Whether we are three or eighty three, we love dressing up and watching others dress up. We love seeing our worlds expanded into new worlds filled with the make believe or magical worlds.

Are you asking about where to obtain them or what they should be?

Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, being one of the most well-known dramas in the Western world, has been staged countless times with many different approaches to costuming.

Traditionalists usually use the toga, either in the Greek or Roman styles. A simple white sheet will suffice to improvise a toga. Adornments like laurel crowns can be improvised from palm leaves or can be purchased from online novelty stores. Similarly, the drama can be placed in the distant, distant past, with Oedipus and the people of Thebes wearing animal skins and rags.

You can give the drama a modern flavor by placing it in the current era -- Oedipus would be the president of a modern state, and the Seer would be a priest or clergyman. The cast could wear business suits and otherwise contemporary dress, similar to what today's dignitaries wear. The chorus could be a group of television news reporters, with microphones, cameras, etc.

Colors are also important. Clothing your main characters in white would add real drama to the climax of the play, when Oedipus gouges out his own eyes and blood spurts everywhere.

Remember, the Greeks did not have the theatrical props, special effects, and cinematic tools that we have. Their stage was sparse, with very little elaboration and simple costumes. The dramatic weight of Sophocles' tragedy makes elaborate staging unecessary. Whatever you choose will no doubt be very effective.

My friend wants one for a trip where planning later this year, and his birthday is next Saturday. I can make everything but the red coat I think, I don't know where to get fabric with a pattern like that. It would take till doomsday to search all the online stores, so does anyone know of anything relevant?

I've tried the Burger King website and anything I can think of on Google, trust me, I wouldnt post here without exhausting the powers of Google first lolz. I was just curious as to if it was someone we might've seen in movies or anything.
I was just curious cuz I think the commercials are hilarious and seeing on the show "Cavemen", the cavemen are all actors we've seen, and I seen a pic one time of Brooke Burke walking with The King, I thought maybe it was like, a character actor or something.

If you love Halloween and are a parent, then you are probably looking forward to dressing up your little bundle of joy in a cute toddler costume. After all, what is more adorable than a cute toddler mumbling some garbled version of trick-or-treat knocking on your door? But before you head out the door with your pint-sized Dora or a cute lobster in a pot, here are some tips to consider.
Go for comfort
If you want a happy toddler you need to choose a comfortable toddler costume. Look for something that is weather appropriate and wont leave your toddler too hot or too cold. If your toddler is going to be wearing the Halloween costume for any period of time, look for one that allows easy access for changing (or can be removed quickly if you are potty training) to help avoid messes. Avoid any toddler costumes that have accessories which could cause choking if swallowed.
Go for safety
You also want to consider your child's safety when choosing a toddler costume. Avoid Halloween costumes that require uncomfortable masks that can hamper vision or breathing. For younger toddlers and infants, you will also only want to use minimal amounts of non-toxic face paint to avoid an allergic reaction. If your toddler is walking, look for a lighter colored Halloween costume or one that is reflective to make sure that he or she will be visible to passing cars. Also look for toddler costumes that are flame retardant, and ones that are machine washable so that you can easily clean up messes.
Go for cute
There are a couple of reasons why you should go for a cute toddler costume instead of a gory one. For starters, you will want to remember that you only have a few years where you can choose your toddlers costume pretty soon they will be old enough to be influenced by friends and movies into picking out their own Halloween costumes. And even if you dont consider that enough of a reason to pick out a cute toddler costume, remember that most people just dont find a gore-soaked infant that appealing. While it might tickle your funny bone, you are probably going to get some strange looks from the neighbors.
Go for fit
While it is tempting as a parent to buy a toddler costume that is a size or two bigger in the hopes of getting multiple uses out of it you should look for a Halloween costume in your toddlers size. Costumes that are too big present a choking and a tripping hazard should your toddler trip on them remember they may not be that steady on their feet yet! And long trailing costumes can brush up against lit jack-o-lanterns and catch fire. If you are looking for a way to save money on your toddler Halloween costume, consider allowing your child to use it for dress up after Halloween, or try reselling it and using the money towards next years Halloween costume. You can even arrange a Halloween costume exchange with friends who have older or younger children to get more use out of your investment.
